The Lexical Liar: Contronyms as Semantic Operators

Abstract

A contronym (or auto-antonym) is a word that appears to mean its own opposite: sanction both permits and punishes, cleave both splits and clings, screen both shows and hides. This companion argues, in the spirit of Patrick Grim's work on paradox and incompleteness, that contronyms are not lexical contradictions. They are context-sensitive semantic operators. The apparent opposition is an artifact of flattening a context-indexed mapping into a single, context-free dictionary entry. Restore the index and the contradiction dissolves.

Background: the Grim angle

Patrick Grim's The Incomplete Universe (1991) argues against a coherent, completed totality of all truth or all knowledge, using the Liar, the Knower, Gödel-style incompleteness, and Cantorian diagonalization. The recurring structure is that paradox is generated by the demand for totalization: when a self-referential or open-ended system is forced to close into a single complete whole, it breaks.

Contronyms are a small linguistic cousin of that structure. The demand here is for a total, context-free dictionary entry, a single object that captures everything the word means. For most words that demand is harmless. For a contronym it produces an apparent contradiction, because the word's two stable senses have opposite polarity. The lesson is the same as Grim's: the trouble is in the totalized representation, not in the thing represented.

The model

Let a word token be w, a context be c, and the semantic value be a polarity in {P, ¬P} (or, in the playground, a signed number in [-100, 100]). A contronym is modelled as a function:

M(w, c) = f_w(c)

For a contronym, the range of f_w contains both P and ¬P:

∃ c₁, c₂ such that M(w, c₁) = P and M(w, c₂) = ¬P

But crucially this is not:

M(w, c) = P ∧ ¬P

The conjunction only appears when the context index c is erased. That erasure is exactly what "collapse context" mode performs in the playground.

The deep operator

Many contronyms are not arbitrary homonyms. Their two senses are two directions of one reversible operation:

The word encodes a transformation; context supplies the direction. Dust the cake adds; dust the shelf removes. This is almost a philosophical joke: the word does not mean one thing or its opposite. It means "perform the dust-operation," and the hearer infers the sign.

Where it gets Grim-like

Most contronyms are harmless until they enter self-reference or institutional framing. Consider:

This rule sanctions sanctioning.

This admits at least four readings: it permits punishment, punishes permission, permits permission, or punishes punishment. The ambiguity is no longer merely lexical, it becomes a modal and institutional instability about whether the system authorizes an act, forbids it, or authorizes the forbidding. Grim's interest in whether modalities such as necessity or knowledge should be treated as predicates or as operators has a smaller linguistic analogue here: perhaps some words should not be treated as simple predicates at all, but as operators whose output depends on context.

The playground

The playground exposes the model directly:

  • Contronym selector, eight words, each with a fixed deep operator and two attractors.
  • Context frame, named contexts, each carrying a hand-assigned polarity pull.
  • Manual contextual pull, a slider from attractor A to attractor B.
  • Custom sentence analyzer, a transparent bag-of-cues keyword scorer that sums matches of curated cue words weighted by each frame's polarity. No syntax, no parser, no world model.
  • Collapse context, erases the index and forces both senses into one slot, switching the reading to "P and ¬P" so you can see the paradox is manufactured.
  • Semantic attractor map, a point moving between two basins; in collapse mode the basins are forced together.

The combined polarity is a fixed linear blend (0.5 frame + 0.38 manual pull + 0.55 keyword text), clamped to [-100, 100], with a basin selected past ±8 and an underdetermined middle.

Limitations

This is a toy, and it is honest about it.

  • The keyword scorer has no grammar. Sentences whose disambiguating cue is structural (word order, negation, long-range dependency) will be mis-scored.
  • The polarity numbers are hand-labelled judgements, not corpus frequencies.
  • Each word is forced into exactly two opposed attractors; graded or multi-modal sense distributions are flattened to two basins plus a middle.
  • The linear blend and the confidence heuristic (50 + 0.49·|score|, capped at 99) are tuned for legibility, not learned or calibrated as probabilities.

The calibration table makes the first two limitations visible: it runs the keyword scorer on ten example sentences and compares its polarity against the hand labels, on a 0–100 "pull toward the second sense" axis. Where the two disagree is exactly where the toy stops being a faithful sketch.

Takeaway

Contronyms are evidence that lexical meaning is often computed through syntax, domain, speaker intention, institutional frame, historical usage, and convention, a distributed inferential system rather than a static table of signs. In a Grim sense, they expose the failure of any totalized, context-free assignment of meaning, and invite a dynamic, operator-over-context account instead.
