Story, Suffering, Coherence: Holding a Narrative Together

Abstract

A life under strain can feel like it is coming apart at the seams, the thread of the story snapping. This playground turns that feeling into a particle system: points that hold together when integrated, fly apart under stress, and can be rewoven by deliberate effort. The metaphor is interpretive, but the coherence score that drives it is an exact, checkable formula, and the companion is clear about which is which.

Three regimes

The system moves between three states, each a claim about how narrative coherence behaves:

  • Harmony: particles drift slowly and stay densely connected. Coherence is high because the parts of the story still link to one another.
  • Burnout: velocities spike, connections shatter, and the system fragments. Coherence collapses to zero, the story no longer hangs together.
  • Weaving: the user clicks pairs of particles to forge connections by hand, standing in for the deliberate work of re-narration, building meaning back link by link.

This three-regime picture is the model's qualitative claim, and the assumptions panel flags it as a simplification: real narrative repair is not a single global switch.

The coherence score

Underneath the metaphor sits a deterministic score, and this is what the calibration pins:

  • In harmony, the score is the number of automatic connections divided by (particle count times five), as a percent, capped at 100. More clustering, more connections, higher coherence. With 100 particles and 250 connections it is exactly 50%; push connections high and it clamps at 100.
  • In burnout, the score is exactly zero, by definition. Fragmentation is total.
  • In weaving, the score is the number of user-built links divided by (particle count over two), as a percent. Ten links among 100 particles gives 20%: coherence earned back through effort.

The calibration checks all three branches and the clamp against their closed forms. The particle motion itself is stochastic and not reproducible; the score is the part that is exact.

Why a graph of proximity

Connections form automatically between particles closer than a fixed distance. So the harmony score is really a measure of how clustered the system is: a tight, integrated cloud scores high, a scattered one scores low. This is graph-by- proximity, a clean and checkable rule, even though reading the resulting graph as a real network of meanings is the interpretive leap.

What it is, honestly

This is a contemplative, metaphorical sandbox, not a psychological instrument. It draws on narrative-identity theory, the idea that we make sense of ourselves by holding a coherent story, but it does not measure anyone's coherence. The defensible content is the scoring mechanism and what it rewards; the mapping from particles and links to suffering and meaning is an analogy offered for reflection, not a result.
